Road to Graduation: Charlotte Carter
From three years old to graduation day: one student's dream comes full circle
For Charlotte Carter, veterinary medicine was never just a career goal; it was a calling she's had since she was three years old. Following graduation in August, that dream will become her daily reality as she heads to Shelbyville, Kentucky, where she has accepted a one-year internship with Kentucky Equine Hospital.
"I am so excited to start officially practicing what I have been taught and to be in the field I have been dreaming of joining since I was 3 years old," she said.
A new career isn't the only exciting chapter ahead. Charlotte and her fiancé are tying the knot on September 4, stepping into married life and veterinary medicine hand in hand.
Now finding herself at the end of her educational journey and easing into her professional one, Charlotte credits her time at the University of Arizona College of Veterinary Medicine with preparing her well for the transition from student to practitioner. The curriculum's emphasis on real-world cases, hands-on learning, and clinical exposure made each step feel like a natural progression.
"Being exposed to a vast array of cases and being able to shadow professors and participate in extra learning opportunities with clubs was definitely a highlight of my learning experience," she said. "The emphasis on real-world cases has made externships a much easier transition."
That foundation, she says, gave her the confidence to step into clinical settings and hit the ground running, something she hopes current students won't take for granted.
Her advice to future students speaks to the spirit of exploration that defined her own journey through vet school.
"Take all the learning opportunities possible, even on topics or specialties you're not necessarily interested in," she said. "Take the chance to travel in clinical year and experience as many types of clinics as possible. The more you branch out, the more you find things you didn't know you'd enjoy."
As she prepares for graduation, a wedding, and a cross-country move all in one season, Charlotte Carter is stepping boldly into everything she's worked toward and everything that's just beginning.
