Returning to Her Roots

Maycen’s journey to becoming a veterinarian has come full circle as she returns to the practice where she first gained hands-on experience. "Small animal GP is primarily where my heart is," she says, emphasizing her love for all aspects of the practice, especially the opportunities to educate and communicate with clients. While small animals are her primary focus, she’s excited to continue working with large animals in some capacity.

As she begins this new chapter in her career, she is most excited about finally doing what she has been working toward for so long. "I am most excited to begin the very thing that I have been working towards for a very long time!" she shares. Her educational experiences have been instrumental in shaping her career path, helping her solidify her goals as a practicing veterinarian.

A First-Generation Student's Advice for Future Veterinarians

As a first-generation college student, Maycen Crawford’s graduation is a momentous achievement not just for her, but for her entire family. Reflecting on this milestone, she shares, "As a first-generation college student, this has been a very exciting and fulfilling time for my entire family. I am so blessed to have such a reliable support system that has been with me each and every step of the way. The time spent during my education was most definitely not only for me but for my family. My upcoming graduation means so many amazing things!"

Maycen’s advice for future veterinarians is rooted in perseverance and community: "Keep going! You will face challenging times, but the other side is worth all the trials and tribulations. During difficult times, lean into those who support and love you the most. Creating a network of good quality people is one of the most important things you can do to accomplish this extreme goal."

She also offers words of encouragement to those entering the profession: "You are exactly where you are supposed to be! The journey here was not easy, and you deserve to be doing this very thing. Congratulations on making it here and enjoy the times ahead! Welcome to this wonderful profession!"
