Celebrating Dr. Walt Klimecki’s Legacy of Student-Centered Teaching

As Dr. Klimecki prepares for retirement, his educational influence and commitment to student-centered teaching are central to his long-term legacy at the University of Arizona. A highly invested veterinary medicine and pharmacology professional and educator, Dr. Klimeck’s role in shaping not only the curriculum but also the identity of the program at the College of Veterinary Medicine reflects his passion for long-term student success. As one of the college’s founding faculty members, Dr. Klimecki was instrumental in creating its innovative lecture-free, hands-on approach to veterinary education, ensuring that every student gains the skills, confidence, and problem-solving ability needed for real-world practice.
His passion for education began at Ohio State University in 1984, where he earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. He later pursued a PhD in pharmacology and toxicology from the University of Arizona in 1994. Dr. Klimecki’s influence reaches far beyond the College of Veterinary Medicine. He holds appointments in the R. Ken Coit College of Pharmacy, the College of Nursing, the College of Medicine, and the Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health. He is also a member of the Asthma and Airway Disease Research Center at the University of Arizona Health Sciences and the BIO5 Institute. Through these roles, he has bridged disciplines, advanced research, and strengthened collaboration across the university.
Throughout his career, Dr. Klimecki has been an impactful fixture in the classroom—making complex pharmacology concepts understandable, relevant, and even enjoyable for generations of students. His long-standing role in teaching pharmacology across the university has had a profound impact on numerous learners, from veterinary students to those in the field of human health.
