About Dr. Shaver

Steph Shaver joined the University of Arizona College of Veterinary Medicine in 2023 as a member of the surgery and anesthesia faculty. Dr. Shaver received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Colorado State University, completed a small animal medicine and surgery internship at the University of Georgia, and obtained board certification by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons following a residency at the University of California at Davis. Dr. Shaver is passionate about veterinary medical education and completed a Master of Science degree in Health Professions Education to grow as an educator and better serve colleagues and students. She spent time in private practice and seven years as an assistant and associate professor of small animal surgery at Midwestern University before joining the University of Arizona CVM.

When not at the University of Arizona, Dr. Shaver is active in clinical practice in both private and non-profit settings. She enjoys soft tissue and orthopedic surgery and seeks to help clients navigate the stressful experience of surgery for a beloved companion animal. She is an invited speaker nationally on small animal surgical topics. She is committed to robust pain management for veterinary patients and holds certifications in veterinary medical acupuncture and canine physical rehabilitation.

Dr. Shaver has authored and co-authored numerous scientific articles and textbook chapters. Her primary research focus is on surgical education, but she has also published on general veterinary medical education topics and subjects such as drain usage, laparoscopic splenectomy, and coccidioidomycosis. Engaging and promoting student interest in research is an important facet of Dr. Shaver’s scholarly work.
